Founded in 1964, public school Julian Newman Elementary School is situated in the middle-sized city of Athens, Alabama. In 2014, during a ceremony honoring the institution's 50th anniversary of founding, the school's name was changed.  The new name was chosen in honor of two retired teachers who had worked there since it opened, Julia Hatchett and Betty Dean Newman. An Athens-Limestone Public Library satellite is directly across the street from Julian Newman Elementary, which is situated between Robert Beaty Historic Park and a residential area. With Pre-K and gifted programs available to pupils who meet the requirements, the range of student grades is Kindergarten through third grade. The Julian Newman Elementary School, where a third of the children receive free or reduced lunches, is located in an area with a variety of housing sizes and price points. By creating and utilizing its HEART Academy, which stands for Helping Everyone Achieve Results Together, this elementary school prioritizes students' mastery of reading and math abilities. The third graders at Julian Newman enjoy a field trip to the Nashville Zoo every year with their peers and teachers. Since many of the students here are second- or third-generation JNES students, education serves as the common bond within this community. Julian Newman's elementary arts education produces citizens who are capable of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. In order to revitalize several areas of the campus in 2018, students, teachers, and community volunteers collaborated to establish an outdoor classroom in the JNES Garden. A songbird sanctuary, sensory flowerbeds, pollinator flowerbeds, herb beds, forest wildlife beds, birdfeeders, birdbaths, and squirrel feeders—all created and planted by the students—can be found inside The Garden.

Julian Newman is the most supportive elementary school that I have seen. I have sent 3 of my 4 children through and they were excellent with all of them.
