Essex County Newark Tech is a vocational high school located in the University Heights sections of Newark, New Jersey. The school serves about 700 students in grades 9-12 and even offers the opportunity to work towards an Associates Degree at nearby Essex County Community College. One of the strongest attributes of the school is the nearly 70% of students who scored proficient on the standardized state reading test. The school also boasts a student to teacher ratio of 14 to 1 and a graduation rate of 95%. The school is comprised of three major academic programs: the Vocational-Technical Program, the Tech Prep Program and the Academy Program. As part of these programs, students who attend Essex County Newark Tech have the opportunity to participate in one of the many Career Technical Education (CTE) programs including Computer-Aided Drafting (C.A.D), Health Careers Academy (Pre-Med program), Medical Assistant, E.M.T., Engineering, Business Technology, Combine Engineering and Electronics and Computer Repair. These CTE programs give students the opportunity to go right from high school into a related career in the community. Most of the school’s buildings are very recently updated, with some renovations having been completed in the Fall of 2022.

I love the sports atmosphere of the school. The school spirit is amazing and this school really becomes a home to the people to work and attend here. They prepare you very well academically and mentally for college.

I deeply enjoyed my 4 years at Essex County Newark Tech. Despite being rep more for a year and a half due to Covid, Newark Tech helped us students embrace the change and provided us with numerous resources to make the transition smoother. Newark tech is a great environment for kids to grow, learn and thrive throughout their high school career and I can confidently say that Essex County Newark Tech is truly one of the best high schools there is.
