Newark Home Trends
New Jersey’s largest city, Newark, is one of the major metropolitan centers to the west of New York City. Although best known as the home of Newark Liberty International Airport, there’s so much more to this sprawling Garden State community. Boasting size and convenient location, Newark’s housing market is full of great properties to choose from, something less common in Jersey City and the Big Apple. The median home sale price has increased just over 13 percent in the last year, far from the increases seen in neighboring cities. The city is comprised of 20 unique neighborhoods, some encompassing skyscrapers and bustling neighborhoods, others made up of more community-forward residential areas. Like much of the tri-state area, there’s a lot of development coming to Newark, mainly in the vertical space. Additional skyscrapers, high-rise apartment buildings, and more are planned for the area.
This waterfront city is bursting with history and entertainment options. The downtown area and much of the entertainment hot spots are stretched along the Passaic River, which forms the city’s eastern boundary. Head to Broad Street to explore the Newark Museum of Art or the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, a vast performing arts theater and event venue that brings in residents and visitors throughout New Jersey for shows and concerts. Broad Street and Market Street feature the largest collection of the city’s dining and shopping options, including upscale restaurants, unique boutiques, and everything in between. Residents can also explore Military Park, a well-maintained green space near the center of downtown. Whether you’re catching a hockey game at the Prudential Center or walking the trails at Branch Brook Park, there’s a plethora of things to do in Newark.
The Newark Public School District is the largest and widest encompassing district in the city. The district features 63 campuses and serves over 40,000 students grades K-12. Newark is also home to a campus for Berkeley College. The city is the site of the main campus of Essex County College and the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the latter of which offers over 120 degree programs through six specialized schools.
Commuting in Newark
Thanks to a dense city grid, Newark is extremely walkable. Many residents can walk to work, the grocery store, or other places. There’s also comprehensive public transit like the PATH that will ferry you around the city center, surrounding communities, and into New York City for either work or leisure. With Newark Liberty International Airport just four miles from the city center, catching a flight for business or a vacation can be done with minimal commuting.
