The Tobin Montessori School is an accredited Montessori school dedicated to the method of teaching developed by Maria Montessori, the Italian physician and educator. The Tobin School is highly ranked and part of the well-regarded Cambridge Public Schools system. Students range in age from 3 to 11 years old, and instruction takes place in several multi-age classrooms. Self-directed activity, learning and play are the key components of a Montessori education. Other key elements include compassion, respect for self and others and cooperation, which are consistently modeled throughout the school by the students and the dedicated staff. The Tobin School’s community of parents is a close and connected one, with parents volunteering throughout the year, from picking up ingredients for class projects and reading to students in the classrooms to volunteering at the schoolwide craft fair and at other school-sponsored activities. The Tobin School was housed in the same building as the Vassal Lane Upper School, and both schools will be returning to their new facilities in 2025 after renovations. The temporary location for Tobin Montessori is at 359 Broadway in Cambridge, and the school community remains strong.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I previously wrote about how great the Tobin was in 2009. That was before my transition out of the school. I can't say the school is that great anymore. Back then, it was wonderful for OTHER students. As I write this review, I realized it wasn't the school for me. The teachers were great, but for di...

As a public Montessori school, the Tobin Montessori (TM) is somewhat of a work in progress, but progress is what this school has been about since its inception. With strong Montessori administration/leadership and very talented and invested teachers, this program is thriving despite the typical publ...
