Sweet melodies waft from Chancellor Elementary in the Alief neighborhood of Houston. Beginning in kindergarten, all Chancellor Comets learn violin. Using the Orff developmental approach to music education, kids learn through four stages: imitation, exploration, improvisation and composition.
Chancellor’s in-demand choir performs at various community venues including nursing homes and administrative buildings, with their busiest time of year being the winter holiday season.
The school educates 950 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Despite the school’s size, it works hard to be a close-knit community where young learners can thrive academically and socially.
Like the other schools in the Alief district, Chancellor has a Family Center. One of the main tasks of the Family Center is teaching English to parents and guardians who need to improve their mastery of English. That way, they’ll be better able to help their students and the community.
Community members mentor students through the Community in Schools program. There's also a Kids Saving Earth club, which works with pre-kindergarten teachers and volunteers to maintain the school gardens.
After school, the free Children Interacting Actively program offers nurturing, supervised activities for students in first through fifth grades.
