The Ann Richards STEAM Academy helps students accelerate in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. In 2011, the three-story building—touted for its energy efficiency—first opened as a middle school within the Dallas Independent School District. For the 2016-2017 academic year, the public school became designated as the STEAM Academy. The campus, located in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas, educates nearly 1,350 students in grades sixth through eighth. The school offers not only a STEAM-centered academic setting but also students can take part in athletics and after-school activities and programs, including a state-ranking robotics team, a garden club and a female mentoring program. The school is named after former Texas Governor Ann Richards, who was known as an advocate for equal rights for women and minorities. The Ann Richards STEAM Academy building is a 184,728-square-foot building that features 63 classrooms, science labs, two gymnasiums, an exterior sun dial courtyard and more. Green elements are throughout the building, including geothermal wells used for cooling and heating and a “cool roof,” as well as educational gardens. The school was built according to the Texas Collaborative for High Performance Schools’ code of environmental standards, which requires the inclusion of energy efficiency and conservation.
