Named for the grove in ancient Greece where the philosopher Plato held classes and discoursed with his students, the Academe of the Oaks strives to uphold the proud Grecian academic spirit. Instructing students from ninth to twelfth grades, this private school accepts less than a hundred students every year, making the campus one of the most selective and exclusive in the Avondale Park area. The school emphasizes active student involvement, creative thinking and intellectual discovery over rout memorization of textbooks for standardized tests, instead learning from the original firsthand sources. The Academe focuses on a college preparatory curriculum with honors and AP options that immerses students into the Western canon of the sciences, mathematics and humanities while also cultivating a sense of civic duty through extensive community service initiatives. A number of extra-curricular options are also available to students, ranging from organizations like beekeeping club, Young Physicians Initiative, fencing club and Amnesty International to the Firebirds sports teams including basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field and ultimate frisbee. The Academe has full accreditation through the Southern Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. With a 100% graduation rate and a high average SAT score, the Academe of the Oaks provides students with a truly classical education for the modern age.

I've been here since 9th grade, and I've had a solid experience to be honest, however the small class sizes can be a good and bad thing. It's good because of the level of 101 time with teachers, but bad because of how stunted your social life may be.

Academe is such a small community that it feels like one big family. Teachers are always willing to help, but you must seek help when needed. Honestly, it's not a hard school. Many of my classmates had jobs and still finished their assignments on time. Most things we learned/did really prepare us for college. Everyone has different experiences, but mine was awesome.

Academe is an excellent school with challenging curriculum and caring faculty members. Students graduate with the tools they need to be able to make their own choices. It is a small school where the student is at the center and can forge any path they choose.

Be careful of what you are committing to. Their style of teaching is a one-way door; you can not go back. Normal schools can not accept credits from this kind of school. Teaching subjects in blocks of a few weeks means you are locking your student's education to that schedule for their remaining tim...

Our child was at AO for a little over 2 years with a very mixed experience. We had long conversations prior to enrollment as a freshman to ensure that the school understood learning and support needs as well as negative prior school experiences. We were assured that their faculty and staff were capa...

This school makes you sign a very one-sided tuition contract that lists your responsibilities as a parent, but it is completely silent on the school's obligations to your child. The minute something goes wrong, they will not hesitate to expel your student and then audaciously refuse to release the s...

My daughter has had a wonderful experience at Academe of the Oaks so far. It's true that the classes are academically challenging, but the work has been engaging and stimulating for her and has pushed her thinking and creativity. She's made good friends, the teachers and administration are wonderful...
