Smith Renaissance School, formerly called Margaret M. Smith Elementary School, serves the students in kindergarten through the fifth grade of the Park Hill neighborhood. Founded in 1954 and named for an educator who taught for 48 years and published a teaching aid on American History, the school is located at 3590 Jasmine St. The school scores below the state average for math and reading, but the dedicated staff is lauded by parents for their approach to instilling character and encouraging excellence in students. Smith’s vision includes teaching self-control and grit, and to that end they greet students by name and encourage them personally. The school offers small class sizes and intensive, personalized instruction in reading and math daily. Educators utilize the Wonders curriculum for reading, and its Spanish language equivalent, Maravillosas. Smith Renaissance School considers itself students’ home away from home. Teachers and staff strive to make them feel safe and included. Students look forward to back-to-school night activities, the winter pajama parties, spring talent show and field day, and the Summer of Adventure reading program through the Denver Public Library. Classes begin early, at 7:30 a.m., and the day ends at 2:30 p.m. Fridays students are dismissed early, at 12:30 p.m.

God forbid it had been something worse she would also call my child a liar. This lady was recently hired and alrea...

This is a delightfully diverse school that doesn't deserve its low school report card ratings. My son is in the 5th grade and due to an unusual set of special needs, has experienced six different schools. This is the ONLY one that has been able to meet them. My theory about the F rating is that the...

My children have been attending Smith Elementary for two years now and we really love it! I can see them flourishing at Smith. This school does not only do very well academically but they also sow a sense of community in every family that attends. I really like that my kids are exposed to this commu...
