James D. Burrus Elementary School is located at 701 E. 33rd St. The school is also known as The Hive because it's the home of the Honeybees. One of two PK-5th grade schools zoned to Independence Heights, Burrus is also a fine arts magnet school for the Houston Independent School District, the largest district in Texas. Burrus's nickname is the Rock of Gibraltar because it's been an Independence Heights fixture since 1911, when it started as a one-room schoolhouse. Named in honor of a formerly enslaved person who became a successful educator, Burrus relocated to its present site in 1928. The fine arts program includes band and gymnastics. After-school activities include basketball, cheerleading, and community-based mentoring. Burrus' 300-plus students scored slightly below math performance expectations but are making acceptable progress toward reaching their math goals. Reading levels are above the state average. Fly by the Burrus Hive to see what the buzz is about!

They do NOT care about the students or even give the needed support towards success , they are there just to collect a check . BULLYING takes place and teachers refuse to help students when students ask for help.

This information is outdated. Burrus Elementary, now proudly rated a B+ school, is far from what it used to be. The culture has dramatically shifted, and the results are clear—STAAR scores are even stronger than last year, and students are thriving in a more focused, supportive environment.Under the...

If I could give this school negative stars it would receive a -1. My son has been at Burrus since 1st grade and he is now in the fourth. Every single teacher he has had has not been proficient. This year alone he's had 3 different teachers before half of the year was up! Progress isn't reported in a...

Burrus worked one on one with me and my son. I'm a single mom , any extra help is needed .The staff were more like family. Even giving kids clothes , when walfare can't help. One year someone donated Nike shoes for christmas.
