Established in 1920, De Zavala Elementary School is a core institution in the fabric of Magnolia Park’s community. This Houston Independent School District (HISD) campus offers a host of educational opportunities, from multilingual and special education curriculum to magnet and advanced academic courses of study for students in pre-K through fifth grade. De Zavala Elementary is one of the strongest elementary campuses in Houston’s East End. The latest available rankings from the Texas Education Agency gave De Zavala Elementary an overall “A” rating, which is higher than the school district’s overall rating. Plus, the campus was recognized as a 2020-2021 Platinum Certified Family Friendly School, the district’s top distinction for dedication in collaborating with community members to promote students’ academic success. Students and community members can get involved at De Zavala in many ways, such as through after-school programs, clubs, sports and more. De Zavala even has two soccer teams! The campus is named after Lorenzo de Zavala, a native of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula and one of the signers of Texas’ Declaration of Independence in 1836. Today, De Zavala Elementary is dedicated to “One Community, One Mission: Student Excellence.”

GreatSchools Rating
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

I moved my two kids to this school because the ratings were great. After a not so good experience at another school my oldest child fell behind. We came in thinking it would take months for her to get where she needed to be. But, after entering De Zavala she was able to “catch up” in only a few week...

This school is not the way it use to be a few years back. I have a total of 4 children and all of my old three attended this school. Now my youngest has just completed kinder and is having trouble because his first language is English and not Spanish! They now have a transition dual Spanish program....

Mr. Due as is the current principal and though this review is not about the principal I must say this principle does an amazing job of investing time and energy into his school and students. He is actively involved in all of the sports events and activities and is actively out recruiting new sponsor...

I substitute teach for the district. I'm in about 60 schools per year-this one is one of the gems-orderly, well behaved children, helpful staff
