Home to a flock of more than 900 Eagles from prekindergarten through fifth grade, Emerson Elementary School is found at 9533 Skyline Drive. As one of the Houston Independent School District’s dual-language schools, Emerson Elementary’s immersive approach helps students at all grade levels achieve fluency in both English and Spanish. Native Spanish and English speakers learn together to develop full bilingualism and biliteracy. Instruction starts mainly in Spanish, and the percentage of English gradually increases through third grade. By fourth grade, half the day’s instruction is in Spanish and the other half in English. Limited English Proficiency, or LEP, students who meet exit criteria during the program can be reclassified as non-LEP, and remain in the program with parent permission. Emerson Elementary also offers a Vanguard program to support the needs of gifted and talented students. As part of the Vanguard program, specially trained teachers provide a more complex, enhanced curriculum at an accelerated pace. When the school day is over Monday through Friday, Emerson Elementary students can participate in an after-school program from 3 to 6 p.m. In addition to homework help, the program offers enrichment activities including cheer, soccer, basketball, dance, arts, and more.
