Located almost equidistant between the Houston Ship Channel and the University of Houston is Benjamin Franklin Elementary School, one of Magnolia Park’s four elementary schools serving students from pre-K through fifth grade. About 530 students attend this Houston Independent School District campus dedicated to the legacy of one of America’s most important statesmen. Franklin Elementary is on a mission to “enhance students’ lives in a way that prepares them to become lifelong learners and productive citizens.” Although the campus earned a “D” rating from the Texas Education Agency in the most recent rankings, work is being done at Franklin Elementary to bolster students’ success. Programs like National Junior Honor Society and a Folklórico dance team provide avenues for students to get involved inside and outside of the classroom. In the 2020-2021 school year, Franklin Elementary was recognized as a Gold Certified Family Friendly School, signifying the principal, teachers, faculty and staff’s resolve to partner with community members to promote each student’s achievement. Overall, this Canal Street campus prides itself on its ability to attract and retain top teacher talent while remaining rooted in the community it calls home.
