High School Ahead Academy Middle School provides an accelerated curriculum for students one or two years behind in school. The Houston Independent School District provides transportation services for students from all over the district who meet the entrance qualifications.
Located at 5320 Yale St., High School Ahead is often considered part of the Oak Forest neighborhood. However, it’s within the city-designated boundaries of the Superneighborhood of Independence Heights, a historical community.
The 198 High School Ahead Warriors can combine seventh and eighth grade to graduate to high school the following year. They can also earn high school credits through free online classes. Students can work on their assignments on their district-issued laptops before, during, or after school.
Although High School Ahead students tested well below expectations for math and reading, students enter below grade level and are making acceptable progress. Students participate in weekly counseling services, community circles, and restorative discipline. They receive help with issues such as mental and physical health concerns.
High School Ahead offers a way to close the gaps and get back on track for middle-school students who have fallen behind. And when Warriors meet the expectation of hard work, the whole school cheers them on and celebrates their success.
