Mable B. Wesley Elementary School is located at 800 Dillard St. and is bounded on one side by Lover's Lane. One of the few Acres Homes schools zoned to the Houston Independent School District, it teaches about 350 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Part of the school is devoted to a magnet program called the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering Professions. Aerospace engineering is a big deal in Houston, as it is the proud home of NASA.
In 1993, Wesley received an A+ for Breaking the Mold award from the US Department of Education. Five years later, the school was featured on an Oprah Winfrey Show titled Exemplars of School. The accolades continued through 2004 when Wesley was named a Title 1 Distinguished Performance School Award.
Houston Independent School District students can apply to magnet schools outside their neighborhoods. The chances of acceptance are highest for kindergarten and sixth-grade students, and, if accepted, the district provides transportation.
