The small school’s neighborhood setting is unique, with roots in a self-contained rural community that dates to the 1800s. By the 1950s dozens of families with ties to the space program at Marshall Space Flight Center had settled there and founded the school in 1959. Parental involvement at this Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse School is at a remarkable 100 percent for the last 36 years. Students here placed third in a statewide robotics competition and earned an A on a state report card in 2018.
