With a stated mission of Motivate, Succeed and Excel, Monte Sano Elementary prioritizes student learning with challenging and fun classes in robotics, theater, chess, green power, Spanish, music, taekwondo and more. Eight out of 10 students score at or above the proficient level for math. U.S. News & World Report ranked it No. 1 among Huntsville elementary schools, with a student-to-teacher ratio of 16-to-1. The small school’s neighborhood setting is unique, with roots in a self-contained rural community that dates to the 1800s. By the 1950s dozens of families with ties to the space program at Marshall Space Flight Center had settled there and founded the school in 1959. Parental involvement at this Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence Lighthouse School is at a remarkable 100 percent for the last 36 years. Students here placed third in a statewide robotics competition and earned an A on a state report card in 2018.
