In 1894, a one-room schoolhouse called the Montana School opened in southwest Denver — now known as the city of Lakewood. As the population — and educational needs — of the surrounding community burgeoned, the school expanded and evolved to become a kindergarten through 12th grade school in 1923. The school would eventual becoming what is known today as Bear Creek High School. In 2009, the current, state-of-the-art facility was built on the site of the original Montana School. Nestled alongside the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the school is 12 miles southwest of Denver, and is one of 18 high schools in the Jefferson County R-1 School District. Serving ninth grade through 12th grade students, Bear Creek athletes compete in 5A athletic programs. School colors are green and gold and the school mascot is, as one would expect, a bear. Bear Creek High School was recognized as a Top 100 high school in the state of Colorado for 2021 and was rated as one of the 2020 Top 5000 STEM Schools in the nation by Newsweek magazine. In 2016, the school was awarded the Colorado Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award for schools that exceed expectations for academic growth. Bear Creek is also home to unique academic programs including Project Lead the Way, National History Day, senior field studies, and biomedical science and hospitality programs. Modern-day Bear Creek High School promises to deliver on its mission statement of “learning, growth and achievement for all.”

I enjoyed a lot of the classes and the teachers that I've had so far. I've had a good experience with athletics and other extracurriculars within the school and have been able to connect with the community because of it. Something they can work on is being fairer towards the girls' sports because of they way they treat the boys and their sports.

I've been in the Bear Creek family for about fifteen years and my siblings have all attended this school. It's great and the teachers care so much more than any school I have ever heard of or visited. The sports are not the best but the music and theatre program are excellent. I would recommend this school because there is something for everyone and it is just overall really good.

We changed to Bear creek from a different school on DPS and we love Bear Creek. The teachers and administrators really care and are there for the kids. I am looking forward to the rest of my son's high school career instead of dreading it!
