I like the school. We have a lot more opportunity than other. It's not the safest but they do the most they can about it. I am really greatful for where they have gotten me!

There was a large student to teacher ratio so one on one help opportunities were hard to get. Money distribution was heavily put into sports.

Throughout my attendance at Mattoon High school a couple of things have stood out to me: Many opportunities with not enough chances to take them, along with a lack of communication. MHS offers several math and science courses above the required, and it has a program called LIFT where you go to another building for part of the day to study a specialized field. However, programs such as this are limited due to the few class periods in a day. With 6 class periods including required courses (for freshman year you have math, English, science, PE, AND world cultures), you have to be careful what classes you take. MHS has a mandatory 20 minute morning class (not included in the 6 mentioned before) called "wave" time, but I think it's more of a "waste" of time. I've been doing it for almost 2 years and I don't know the point. It's a study hall, except they have awkward yet boring activities under the guise of teaching leadership. They're actually teaching us how to waste 20 minutes a day.
