PS 111, or the Adolph S. Ochs School, is a public school located on West 53rd Street in Hell’s Kitchen that serves students in prekindergarten through fifth grade. Applications for prospective students interested in attending the Adolph S. Ochs School must be placed through the New York City Public Schools application portal. Interested students can also apply to the school’s Gifted and Talented program through a separate application. Students at PS 111 are fully prepared to take middle school admissions assessments alongside their peers through the city's standardized placement tests. In addition to the school’s well-rounded curriculum, students can participate in many after-school offerings, such as the Chickenshed Players, a theatrical troupe and program that conducts workshops for children taught by professionally trained artists and thespians. The troupe provides inclusive lessons and exercises to help students find their voices through storytelling, music and American Sign Language. Another after-school program is Kids in the Game, which combines sports, homework help, creative movement, dance, STEM projects, fitness games and special events.

I have two kids in gifted and talented at PS 111 Positives: -Incredibly diverse -great principal -dedicated teachers (some are first rate) -great peer group -older kid is ahead in grade level in reading and math due to individual attention -smaller g&t class sizes, since not as discovered as more established/older g&t programs (we had option to send younger child to one) Negatives: -who knows what will happen to g&t in NYC -parental involvement is not as active as some other schools -overall test scores are lower than wealthier districts but the g&t test scores are great -pre-covid there was too much emphasis and communication around showing up on time which seemed driven ultimately by city funding

This school is not good but not the worst. My child used to go here since 2nd grade and when she was In 5th grade everybody had to go remote because of the covid outbreak. This is one the most diverse schools in NYC and it’s emblematic of how great it is to have a newer g&t program in a school like this vs in a wealthier school like PS 11 or PS 198.
