Named after a former student who became one of America’s most celebrated musical theater composers, the Richard Rodgers School of the Arts and Technology, known as P.S. 166, enrolls approximately 630 students annually in kindergarten through fifth grade. Richard Rodgers offers general education programs from its grand, Collegiate Gothic-style building built in 1898. The building underwent a complete renovation in 1995, including constructing an award-winning playground with separate facilities for kindergarten and older students. P.S. 166’s curriculum stresses literacy from kindergarten on, following guidelines from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Science projects often have an interdisciplinary element; first-grade students experiment with various musical instruments to learn about the characteristics of sound waves. As the students advance, they study more sophisticated subjects. Third-grade students study the scientific process of inheriting traits and learn about the weather. Then, in fifth grade, students cover more complicated topics like the United States’ westward expansion and the restoration of the planet’s ecosystems. The Richard Rodgers School is well known for its active Parent-Teacher Association, which organizes many school fundraisers. Notable alumni from P.S. 166 include singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester, polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk and author J.D. Salinger.

As a fifth grader in this school, I am really sad to leave. I love the fact that the school does a lot of hands - on learning and teaches us in a lot of fun and creative ways. I am grateful for how help will always be given when we need it. All the teachers here are wonderful and are really experien...

Administration is horrible, especially the principal. She bullys her staff and they act afraid of her. All, and I mean all the teachers are wonderful but she ruins the atmosphere there. She tries to act like she is supportive but she doesn't care about anything or anyone but her reputation. PS 166 w...

Both of my kids graduated from 166. We like it a lot in general. It was definitely a positive experience.

Not a good fit for us. Only focused on State test performance. Too rigid and not supportive of kids with special needs
