The School at Columbia University, also referred to as “TSC” or simply “the School,” is a private institution enrolling approximately 530 students in kindergarten through grade eight. A partnership arrangement has led to academic collaborations with Columbia University faculty and graduate students. For example, University-affiliated staff serve as instructors for the school’s Model U.N. program and may coach the school’s athletic teams. TSC's faculty, around 150 strong, allows for a low student-to-teacher ratio of approximately four-to-one. The school assigns all students in kindergarten through second grade a computer tablet, and each student in higher grades receives a dedicated laptop. The school’s purpose-built, 80,000-square-foot, six-floor building opened in fall of 2003, and all classrooms, studios, labs and library were fully remodeled 10 years later. Instructional disciplines include dance, educational technology, literacy and English, mathematics, music, science, social and emotional learning, social studies, Spanish, visual arts, and wellness. An impressive slate of dozens of after-school clubs and classes complement an equally impressive athletics program, with the TSC Lions fielding teams wearing the school’s blue colors in basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, track and field, and volleyball. Once every two years, the school holds a science and engineering expo, while the annual fall festival is free and open to the neighborhood community.

There are som many exoeriences ehre at Columbia. Getting in is the hardest part and it serves as a coonnection for all students. The best part is that you all live on campus because you come from all over the world.

They have the best advisers there. It truly makes a difference if you are swimming in an ocean all by yourself or if there is a boat that picks you up.

As a kid, I really enjoyed the school. I am a middle eastern student, and my first issues arose when I was in kindergarten and people would side eye me on 9/11. At the time, I also had undiagnosed ADHD and autism, so I was mostly regarded as the “weird kid”. I didn’t get an iep until I was in eighth...

Honestly, when I was younger I LOVED the school, but I had undiagnosed ADHD and Autism, and despite working extremely close with the teachers they somehow never picked up on it. Some of the teachers were extremely hard on me for it because I struggled to pay attention. In fact, there was a notorious...

Staff was often rude to students of color as well as gay students. I was often bullied by students and my sixth grade english teacher for coming out as a trans man. My own principal pulled me out of class once to scold me for talking too much, he told me to not speak as my peers were “laughing at me...
