Located just one block from the famous Tompkins Square Park, Tompkins Square Middle School serves sixth through eighth grades in Alphabet City. Founded in 2001, this progressive middle school was founded by a grassroots coalition made up of teachers and parents, and has since become an award winning school.
Tompkins Square Middle School emphasizes collaborative work, self-reflection, critical thinking, and community building. Students are encouraged to explore who they are, and forge their own paths to grow into the person they want to be, while still being heavily supported by the school’s dedicated educators. Tompkins Square Middle School offers both a rigorous traditional curriculum and a strong arts curriculum with dance, theater, music, and visual arts provided to all grades. This tech-savvy school also offers an after school program to students which gives them a supportive environment to explore new hobbies and passions through several enrichment programs.

I am a tomkins square student and over all it is a great school there's many activities for students and the teachers are very passionate about teaching. I like that when they take kids to trips we are learning something by that trip great school recommend going!

Most of the teachers were very knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects and were willing to tutor students outside of the classroom. However, there were a couple that didn't teach the subject efficiently or at all. There were very little after school clubs and activities offered.

The academics are standard. The school is shared with 2 other elementary schools. I would say Tompkins is an average middle school. The teachers care for the students and try their best to help them with their academics.

To be honest, I would give this school a Zero, but there appears to be no option. We have been enrolled in this school since September 2022 and have had the most negative experience with the Principal. The school is not safe, the students appear to run the school and there is no sense of community....
