Mason-Rice is one of 15 elementary (K-5) schools in Newton. The current Mason-Rice School was built in 1959 to replace two older schools, the Mason School and the Rice School. This one story brick building extends back toward the Newton Centre Playground and is larger than it appears from the front facade.
Mason-Rice Elementary School is adjacent to the Newton Center Playground, a historic outpost from 1890 offering playground equipment, the City's only clay tennis courts with backboards, sports fields, including baseball, soccer, volleyball and basketball courts and a tot lot.
Mason Rice is a wonderful resource in the Newton Center community and can be accessed by school bus, walking and by car.
The Newton Public Schools actively cultivates a culture of equity and excellence by creating and sustaining curriculum and instructional practices that lead to high quality learning for each and every student. We intend to provide curriculum and instruction that inspires and engages students, and ensures that all students become knowledgeable, responsible, caring and contributing members of society.
