Founded in 1961, Oak Park's Alcuin Montessori School is one of the oldest Montessori schools in the country. Housed in a striking Gothic building, the Alcuin Montessori School serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade and enrolls 141 students who enjoy a student-to-teacher ratio of 10-to-1.
Alcuin Montessori prioritizes a classroom arrangement that is adaptable to each individual child's needs. Children ages three to five study together acquiring social, perceptual, language and motor coordination skills. Elementary classes focus on factual and abstract learning and students gain experience developing personal discipline and working within groups.
Middle school students engage in more complex critical thinking while establishing their young adult identities. Middle schoolers often pursue project-based academic goals that involve student-led research and formal class presentations.
Throughout the Montessori education process, students' school attendance is enhanced by Spanish language classes, swimming, PE, technology use and planned field trips to local Chicago museums and performance venues. Each year, elementary students write, produce and stage an opera and also host a cultural festival that celebrates other countries and their traditions.
Supporting independent thought, Alcuin Montessori's programming emboldens students to discover their passions and a lifelong love for learning.

I graduated in 2019, and even now, my professors ask me what my educational background is (like they did in high school.) When I tell them I am a Montessori grad, they say with a smile, "It makes sense!" Alcuin prepared me not only for high school and college, but for life. They gave me the tools and said, "Now it's up to you!" and I'm not worried or scared. I am confident in who I am and my educational path in life thanks to Alcuin.
