Located at 1125 S. Cuyler Ave., Washington Irving Elementary School serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school was first established in 1910 and named after African American short story writer Washington Irving, who famously penned, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Today, Irving Elementary enrolls 518 students who enjoy an average student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1. The faculty emphasizes the importance of a focus on academics, as 52% of students test at or above proficiency levels in math and 46% are proficient readers. Irving's vibrant program of extracurricular activities and enrichment includes the annual poetry slam and arts festival, the Irving school garden club, architecture adventure, Math Olympiad and the green team that helps kids explore sustainability and environmental issues. Through Washington Irving's World Languages program, students are invited to explore up to seven languages that include Swahili, Greek, French, German, Italian, Mandarin and Spanish. For over 120 years, Washington Irving has remained committed to building students' self-awareness and opening children's minds and remains a significant part of the Oak Park community and its educational footprint.

In the district Irving is a bright spot. However This listing is wrong there is no gifted and talented program.
