Located at 715 N. Harvey Ave., Whittier Elementary first opened in Oak Park in 1901 and serves pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. A mix of historical and modern additions, the main part of the school was built in 1928 while Whittier's south wing was added in the 1950s and the building's tower and library were completed in the 1970s.
Whittier Elementary enrolls 386 students who enjoy an average class size of 14 and a student-to-teacher ratio of only 10-to-1. 42% of Whittier's students are proficient in math and 37% test at or above proficiency levels in reading.
In addition to a strong academic curriculum, classroom instruction at Whittier Elementary is enhanced by practical after school activities. Designed to integrate book learning with enrichment experiences, extracurriculars at Whittier include computer coding, martial arts, chess, acting, music and homesteading. Whittier's kindergarten through fifth grade students are encouraged to join the school's "Kitchen Wizards" club to practice their baking and meal preparation skills.
Physical fitness is valued at Whittier Elementary and kids can participate in floor hockey, dodgeball, PE and yoga.

I'm reviewing mostly to point out that the current school rating (as of this writing at 4 of 10) is due to a movement of many parents pulling their kids out of standardized testing in protest. Only a few years ago, the school was a 9/10. Obviously, the school quality is not going to change that dram...
