Named for the last governor of Mexican California, Pio de Jesus Pico, Pio Pico Elementary School maintains a vision “to develop lifelong learners and thinkers who are eager and well-prepared to make positive contributions in a diverse global community.” The Pío Pico learning community is located in the second most youth-dense neighborhood in the U.S, and the school serves 474 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Classroom instruction adheres to California’s Common Core State Standards for English language arts and literacy and mathematics, using research-based and data driven best practices. Prizes are awarded to students for attending and being on time at Pio Pico. The school’s mission is to be a hub for the school community, centralizing effort and resources for outreach that addressed the holistic needs of students and their loved ones. Pio Pico and James Russell Lowell Elementary schools entered into a partnership with the Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club (Club) and Santa Ana College (SAC) to provide literacy training and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for parents. The partnership has increased parent involvement in the schools, the Club and in the neighborhood by more than 100%, including P.T.A. and School Site Council meetings.
