Since its founding in 2005, Casco Bay High School has been preparing students for college through Expeditionary Learning—a deep dive into learning about a topic through the process of fieldwork, research and service. Topics of study generally involve real world events and problems; for example, recent programs have tackled flu epidemics and the BP Oil Spill. The projects culminate at the end of the school year in a final project or performance. Students can supplement their studies with project intensives twice per school year, studying a topic for one week. Choices intensives include snowshoeing, boat-building and personal finance. Serving roughly 400 students, Casco Bay High School boasts an impressive college acceptance rate and is the recipient of multiple awards. In 2014, Casco Bay High School was the recipient of the $100,000 Larry O'Toole Award. Co-curriculars offered at Casco Bay High School include theater, ultimate frisbee and Model United Nations. Sports-minded students have the option of joining existing teams at the other area high schools, Deering High and Portland High. Students who are residents of Portland and interested in attending Casco Bay High School must enter a lottery to earn a spot; the school is typically fully enrolled with a waitlist of hopeful students.

Overall Casco Bay High School is great and is a very welcoming environment for everyone. Each teacher goes out of the their way for their students to be heard and I think that's awesome. I do think the classes could be more rigorous and allow less revisions so that there's higher stakes for good grades and high quality work.

I love how they incorporate leadership within the learning and there is a sense of the teachers wanting to have you strive to do your best and to get out of your shell at certain times.

Casco Bay High School has a fabulous staff and community. Very proud of the work I did there and the work that is done there. They really live by their slogan, Get Smart to do Good. Hope in the future more schools become like CBHS.

I'm so glad my daughter went there (and she is, too). The humanities were really outstanding, STEM, at the time, not so much. She learned great study skills and great life skills which served her well at a very demanding college. The things CBHS was weak on she could easily get access to elsewhere:...

Ignore the negative trolling about this school. My daughter went here and was accepted to both Smith and Mt. Holyoke with major scholarship money. The school is brilliantly quirky, stops bullying immediately, and changes lives. Founding Principal Derek Pierce is an educational genius, and I'm not ex...

This school has no rules, regulations, or college prep. They don't know where there kids are, they don't grade like a high school should, and they're allowed to have late papers. What's the point? The set up is terrible DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO GO HERE IF YOU WANT THEM TO HAVE AN EDUCATION AND G...
