East End Community School serves prekindergarten through fifth grade in the East End neighborhoods of Portland. The school was constructed in 2006 and is home to a growing population of approximately 400 students. The design of the school creates a warm, welcoming and enriching environment for learning and teaching. Large windows allow natural light to pour into classrooms and solar panels on the roof provide the school with energy-efficient electricity. A nearby community garden engages students in planting and harvesting, with volunteers tending the crops. The academic program exposes students to a rigorous curriculum emphasizing mathematics while also incorporating the areas of literacy, health and wellness, languages, citizenship and the arts, as well as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM program. The school also works with the Maine Educational Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to provide services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

My daughters have had very positive experiences. The leadership is responsive to parent concerns, there are supports in place for students who struggle, and the school community is WONDERFUL, including community dinners, and an annual dance party.
