Reiche Community School is an elementary school located on Brackett Street in Portland’s West End neighborhood. The school prides itself on being Maine’s first teacher-led school. Instead of being administered by a principal, the school is directed by four committees of teachers and a leadership team that collaborates with parents and students.
In 2015, Reiche Community School and Portland Public Schools won a national award for this cooperative and innovative approach, which transformed the school into a nontraditional and unique educational option for students in the Portland area.
With students from 22 different countries speaking 29 different languages, Reiche is one of Portland’s most diverse elementary schools. The school has an active parent-teacher organization that fundraises for student activities like yoga and dance classes. Reiche’s Green Team has also worked to incorporate green space into the school’s facility, including a vegetable garden and outdoor classroom areas.
Reiche is one of several Portland schools that is due for renovation. Construction began in the summer of 2022 and is expected to be finished by the winter of 2023.

Both of my children went to Reiche. I don't usually post reviews online, but after seeing the horrible rating on this site, I felt compelled. The teachers are incredible: hardworking, intelligent, creative, and caring. They are so good at building community in an amazingly diverse school for Maine....

A great school to teach at. We celebrate our diversity and teachers are passionate about helping every student succeed. We also have great parents who work with us as a team to help students succeed. Our students enjoy being there and we welcome everyone from all over the world.

I have been a guest teacher at Portland Schools, K-5 for over 2 years. I rate Reiche #1. Team Leaders, Teachers, and all Staff are dedicated and passionate professionals. The students are engaged in learning and altogether help to build a wonderful community!
