P.S. 88Q - The Seneca School is at 60-85 Catalpa Avenue in the Ridgewood neighborhood. The school reflects the rich history of the surrounding neighborhood. As part of Community School District 24, P.S. 88 serves children as young as 3 years old up to 5th grade. During the pandemic, P.S.88 moved into the virtual teaching environment, and in 2021 the students returned to in-person learning.
Special programming. Does the school offer specialized programs such as computer coding or foreign languages? Is it known for its athletics? What is its mascot? Does it offer any special clubs or popular activities?
P.S. 88 has a vibrant early childhood program, with a STEM class for each grade. The New York State Diversity Grant created the STEM classes providing funding and resources along with training for teachers to keep pace with the changing speed of technology. The 2022 school year will begin a Gifted and Talented class for third graders as part of the local mayor’s initiative to expand gifted and talented programming to more students. The art program expanded into music, visual arts, theater, and dance. Several student activities are available to help students learn new things and met new people. These clubs include a student council, social justice committee, and a chess club, where third through fifth graders learn to play and compete. There is a thriving music department that houses students in band, with multiple music rooms, and various instruments.
Reputation. What is the school rating, graduation rate, and how many students go on to higher education? Does it get high remarks and reviews? If not, is there a way to put a positive spend on the schools’ trajectory? Is it under new leadership and improving?
P.S. 88 believes that each child brings a unique set of abilities and talents to the school. Students receive daily instruction in an enriching environment that encourages students to respect each other and work together to complete goals. Faculty and staff set out clear expectations to support the children to reach their highest potential. Each employee of P.S. 88 from the custodians, to the cafeteria workers, to the paraprofessionals and teachers values each student as an individual. Students learn social student, science, math, and language arts.
