Schenck Elementary School is a part of the San Antonio Independent School District, the third largest school district in the greater San Antonio area. Named after former district teacher and principal Kate Schenck, the school opened in 1955 and grew dramatically in its first year. It is currently the second largest elementary school in the Highland Hills neighborhood and serves grades prekindergarten – five. NICHE which evaluates colleges and schools based on several core competencies, gives Schenck an overall above average rating with the areas related to the teaching staff and academics leading the way. Employing tenets of Project Based Learning, Schenk uses a student-centered approach that focuses on collaboration and development of critical thinking skills. Foundational curricula include Science, Reading, Mathematics, English Language Arts, and Social Studies. There are also Bilingual and Gifted and Talented Programs available. Students have a wide range of extracurricular activities to select from as well. Offerings like Chess Club, Robotics Club, and Photography Club are just a few examples of programs that round out the educational opportunities at Schenck.
