Fidel F. Tafolla Middle School is part of the San Antonio Independent School District choice and magnet program, designed to promote access to schools best suited to the student. Tafolla offers a dual-language education program and some high school courses. Admission is through an attendance zone that covers the neighborhood of Avenida Guadalupe, extends slightly into the Southtown and Lone Star neighborhoods to the east, and west into the Prospect Hill and Greater Gardendale neighborhoods. Recent student enrollment was approximately 450.
The school offers a STEM lab and a special education program. The school has wide selection of extracurricular activities like athletics, cheerleading, orchestra, theater arts, band, student council and National Junior Honor Society. Tafolla Middle School is one of the SAISD schools that teaches mariachi.
Fidel F. Tafolla served as principal of Lanier High School. One of his descendants, Carmen Tafolla, was San Antonio’s poet laureate from 2012-2014. Former Tafolla student Julian Castro went on to serve as secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration.

There are many, and i mean many, extra curricular activities available. Tafolla is a big school with unique students and a variety of interests. There is a French club, a cooking club, and one of the more unique ones is an anime club.
