Van Sickle Academy is a public middle school located on Carew Street in the Liberty Heights neighborhood of Springfield. The school was previously known as Van Sickle Middle School, opened in 1933, and is now one of three schools that share the large campus and its facilities. The three schools were established to create small communities within the building and enhance student–teacher relationships. Van Sickle Academy is a Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership school. The school receives broad and comprehensive support to meet its learning targets through the program, which partners with the Springfield Education Association and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Sixth through eighth grade students at Van Sickle Academy learn from an individualized curriculum for each grade level that includes math, science, social studies, language arts, physical education and art courses. The campus sits against a large, wooded area, where students have access to a baseball field and track providing ample recreational space. Well-manicured green spaces can also be found in front of the building and in the school’s three courtyards.
