The Washington School is a public elementary school located on Washington Street in the Forest Park neighborhood of Springfield, Massachusetts. The school serves over 400 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The school offers both half-day and full-day pre-kindergarten, and class sizes are smaller than average with a student-teacher ratio of 16-to-1.
The historic, two-story school building was first opened in 1917, and students have been growing into lifelong learners at the Washington School ever since. The school’s outdoor areas include a playground, a well-maintained lawn, and a small seating area. Through a partnership with FoodCorps, students at the Washington School also spend time in the school’s outdoor garden engaging in hands-on lessons in science, health and nutrition.
Washington School students engage in learning various core subjects including art, science and technology. According to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the school has progressed toward several academic targets in recent years—demonstrating the Washington School’s commitment to progress and 100-plus years of learning.
