An impressive and historic building with a colonial-style tower and cupola, Washington Irving Intermediate School on South Broadway in Tarrytown offers a wonderful education to 600 students in third through fifth grade. Washington Irving Intermediate is the rare educational facility in the village not located on “school row” farther north along Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, but the school’s beautiful facility on the river more than makes up for it. A majority of the faculty members at Washington Irving Intermediate School have three-plus years of teaching experience, and the student-teacher ratio is 12-to-1, which is smaller than average and allows for more individualized instruction. More than fifty percent of Washington Irving students score at or above the proficiency level for math and reading. The students at Washington Irving Intermediate School enjoy an active school community that participates in athletics, chorus, orchestra and band, with annual field days and concerts to look forward to as well. The school's expansive grass playground looks out onto scenic panoramas of the Hudson River and the Mario Cuomo Bridge, with views that are perhaps little noticed by the young students at Washington Irving Intermediate, but are no doubt treasured by the community.
