Founded more than 50 years ago by local parents and educators in Barrio San Antonio, Highland Free School is a non-profit public charter school serving about 50 children in kindergarten through sixth grade in the Tucson area.
Here, the faculty embrace the natural curiosity of children and approach education in a way to excite and encourage students to become lifelong learners. With small, multi-age classrooms and involvement from parents and caregivers, Highland Free fosters a greater sense of belonging and community to help everyone feel more connected in and out of school.
As for the curriculum, students excel in project-based lessons, hands-on activities and individualized learning. In addition to English language arts and a STEM focus, students learn through a series of changing unit topics ranging from geography and ecosystems to theater and the Renaissance.
Outside of the classroom, students at Highland Free School can participate in science fairs, talent shows and field trips, among other enriching activities. Additionally, the school has a sandy playground with a range of play structures, an outdoor work area for crafts and school projects along with an animal pen, which is home to a family of chickens, ducks and pygmy goats that offer opportunities for children to learn and care for the natural world.
By encouraging parents and caregivers to volunteer at the school on a regular basis, Highland Free School goes the extra mile to nurture the best learning environment for students every day.

After having tried out two other small/alternative elementary schools, we found Highland, and are so glad that we did! The teachers are amazing; I wish my teachers had the energy and passion for teaching that I have seen at Highland.

My son is attending this school, he loves his classmates, teachers, princial and the pets too. He moved from a public school to Highland and I immediately saw the difference. I couldn't be hapier with the school and community.
