Located just around the corner from Jácome Plaza and the Joel D. Valdez Main Library, Paulo Freire Freedom School is a small public charter school serving students in sixth through eighth grade in downtown Tucson.
At PFFS, as it’s commonly called, students are immersed in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum heavily focused on project-based learning in science, technology, engineering and math. The school has become a demonstration site and learning lab to foster the best project-based learning and STEM instructional practices — teaching methods developed and tested here might be replicated across Arizona and the U.S. Students learn in rotating blocks of instruction — from morning interdisciplinary study to mid-day math and writers’ workshops to afternoon lab sessions. Twice a year, students spend a week focused on a single topic or theme while on field trips or with out-of-classroom experiences.
Students are also responsible for hosting progress presentations for parents, peers and teachers in student-led conferences that take place in autumn and late winter. Come visit Paulo Freire Freedom School – where students are nurtured to help us solve tomorrow’s problems.
