Nestled in the growing Starr Pass neighborhood, Andy Tolson Elementary is a public school serving more than 300 children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade as part of the Tucson Unified School District. The faculty embrace a “be kind” motto with a genuine care for all the kids, which in turn inspires the students to have a greater love for learning. All Tolson Thunderbirds learn to soar in order to be safe, organized, academic and responsible. With a traditional focus on reading, writing and arithmetic, Tolson earns test scores in reading and math well above the district and state averages. Most notably, many students succeed through the Two-Way Dual Language program that helps all students become bilingual. Through the district’s Opening Minds through the Arts program (OMA), Tolson Elementary also hosts a dedicated arts integration specialist who works with local artists to teach classes twice a week that complement learning in core subjects. Students can learn to play instruments, sing or explore other arts with guest teachers from the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Arizona Opera Company and other local arts organizations. Additionally, students can dance and perform through the school’s cherished Thunderbirds Folklorico program. Every day, children at Tolson Elementary can embrace fun, cultural pride and learning.
