Students seeking a nontraditional rigorous education may want to consider Union Day School (UDS), a tuition-free public charter school serving students in kindergarten through ninth grade. The school was founded in 2016 to provide a student-centered wholistic interdisciplinary education. It started small, serving grades kindergarten through three only, and added one grade in each subsequent year. In 2022, UDS welcomed its first ninth graders, and plans to continue adding grades through all of high school. Its enrollment in 2022 was approximately 700 students, with a teacher-to-student ratio of 21-1, the same as the Union County school district overall. Students apply for admission and are selected via a lottery system.
Many features make UDS stand out. The school is the only one in the state to offer the International Baccalaureate middle year program (IB MYP), which provides college prep IB courses to students in grades six through eight; the IB program is offered for high school students as well. Students begin taking Spanish, music, art and physical education in kindergarten. And, similar to “Harry Potter’s” Hogwarts, students in all grades are divided into five “houses” to form friendships, create activities, and participate in friendly competitions. From rigorous academics to unique social opportunities, UDS gets high marks from students.

My daughter attended kindergarten a year ago and loved it! Now she's about to finish her first grade year moving into second grade and she will continue to go to the school. She's learned so much. The teachers are warm and welcoming. I could not ask for a better school.

I have two children at Union Day School. The staff turnover is extremely high and the administration has little to no involvement in student/parent problems and concerns. It impossible to get someone from administration to call you back and then it begins the pass the parent off game. This is my 3rd year at UDS and I have seen little to no improvement in admin/teaching staff.

they put students way above certain students and it's so annoying when one student does one thing and then a certain type of a student does the same thing they called out and in tro0uble and the curriculum is SO BAD the teachers here barely teach anything most of them probably don't even know about...
