While many people know Scranton from the hit TV show The Office, they might not know South Side. Just 1.8 miles south of downtown Scranton, South Side’s rolling hills and residential streets keep people close to the city center without putting them in the middle of the action. “It’s a little more industrial,” says Realtor Michelle Valvano with Classic Properties. “There’s a lot of sheet metal places and manufacturing, as well as old homes where coal miners used to live.” The neighborhood is just across from some of Scranton’s most important historical sites, highlighting the city’s past as a rail and iron center. With local businesses and a culture that highlights its feature in The Office, residents in South Side have plenty to do on their side of town.

Referenced and featured in The Office, Poor Richard’s Pub always has something going on, from weekly karaoke to football. The local joint serves standard pub food and stays open until 2 a.m., so people can stay as long as they want. For pizza and Italian cuisine, people can head over to Alfredo’s Pizza. At My Mother’s Delicacies, people can shop baked goods and classic cookies, like black and white cookies. Rugelach is their specialty, which they handroll and make fresh daily. For groceries, Taylor Commons offers a Walmart Superstore and Price Chopper about 2.8 miles from South Side. Along Meadow Avenue, people can stop at Gerrity’s. South Side Seafood has sold fresh and frozen seafood in South Side for 30 years. South Side also features many local markets featuring international goods, like Yeshiva Cooperative, International Deli and Grocery and Namaste Grocery.

Locals can explore Scranton's industrial history and parks
On the residential side of South Side, Connell Park hosts little leagues on its fields and courts. Residents can also take a dip in the pool here. For bikers, the BMX pump track adds some challenges to grow their skills. Pet owners can take their dogs to the fenced-in dog park. On the other side of Roaring Brook is Nay Aug Park, where people can hike the Davis Trail to get to The Gorge. This natural formation features the brook running through the rocky hillside, created thousands of years ago in the most recent ice age. For more recent history, downtown Scranton features Steamtown, which is operated by the National Parks Service to highlight the industrial history of Scranton. Here, visitors can take train rides through the old rail yards or visit the museum to view artifacts and watch demonstrations. The Scranton Iron Furnaces include the remnants of Scranton’s iron and steel days with big stone structures visitors can walk through.

Traditional farmhouses and foursquares around South Side
South Side homes are a healthy mix of traditional farmhouses, American foursquares and duplexes listing between $100,000 and $225,000. Most houses feature front porches with steps connecting them to the sidewalks running on both sides of the street. When properties offer front lawns, they are often smaller, but residents still enclose them in fences and add small trees and bushes for a pop of color. Many people park in front of their homes on both sides of the street, though some houses may feature a narrow driveway or a detached garage available via an alley behind the property. St. Paul of the Cross Parish’s two spires with blue domes are visible to many residents around it.

Scranton's St. Patrick's Parade and The Office 5K
Shortened to just The Parade by locals, Scranton St. Patrick’s Parade is one of the largest in the country. Local Irish groups and societies participate with bagpipes and Irish dancers. After the parade, the festivities continue at local businesses and restaurants with live music and themed activities. In July, the city celebrates Independence Day with the Scrantastic Spectacular and Fireworks Show, where members of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic play in Courthouse Square. For fans of The Office, the city hosts a themed 5K each May. Participants dress up like characters from the show. For those who aren’t big runners, the race also offers a 1-mile walking course.
Students can volunteer at West Scranton High
For kindergarten through fourth grade, students can attend John F. Kennedy Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche. South Scranton Intermediate School serves grades fifth through eighth and obtains a C-minus from Niche. West Scranton High School offers lots of volunteer opportunities for students, and athletes can join several sports teams, like basketball, football, track and field and wrestling. The school earns a B-minus from Niche.

Pittston and Washington Avenues link to South Side to downtown
Scranton’s buses extend into South Side, connecting residents to amenities and downtown via Pittston and South Washington Avenues. I-81 runs along the neighborhood’s southern border, linking with Wilkes-Barre Scranton International Airport, only 5.5 miles away. Three different hospitals are within 2 miles of South Side, including Geisinger Community Medical Center over by Nay Aug Park and Commonwealth Health Regional Hospital of Scranton along Pine Street. In general, Scranton is popular with New York and Philadelphia commuters looking to live within two hours of their work while maintaining a lower cost of living in Scranton.
Pittston Avenue is where the majority of shopping and dining is located in South Side Scranton.
