Named Brighton from Britain, Othello from the street
British immigrant settlers gave Brighton its name in the 1880s, as they found it reminiscent of the seaside city they left behind in East Sussex, England. It's less than a mile to the shore of Lake Washington. "Brighton is such a small neighborhood; I don't really hear people even mentioning it. If anything, locals call it 'Othello,'" says Geoff Hill, managing broker and a top-producing agent with Keller Williams Greater Seattle. South Othello Street is the main east-west corridor, where the light rail station is located. "This is one of a number of other smaller neighborhoods most locals just call 'Rainier Valley,'" Hill says. This southeast Seattle neighborhood, located about 7 miles from downtown, has blossomed into a multicultural hub with businesses and eateries along two thoroughfares. "Its demographics are significantly more diverse than many other parts of the city," Hill says. There's a variety of culturally focused establishments and houses of worship.

Stores and eats on Rainier and MLK Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Rainier Avenue run north-to-south through Brighton, and both feature an array of businesses and eateries. Some locals start their morning with a vegan breakfast sandwich and a drink special at Cafe Red. There's variety galore when it comes to cuisine, from Hoang Duong's Vietnamese specialties to Yusra & Sabah's authentic Mediterranean, Ethiopian and Halal food. More traditional fare is found at Blue Nile and at Kebena Restaurant and Market. Across the street, there's Balageru International Mart. Culture in Rainier Valley Creative District
The Rainier Valley Creative District, the first state-designated creative district within the city's limits, uses arts and culture to unify the community. Running along Rainier Avenue from South Alaska Street to Chinook Beach Park, the district is populated by arts-focused and culturally related organizations and establishments. Brighton is mainly a residential area with various housing options. Many of the single-family homes in the area date back to the early 20th century and have been remodeled. Craftsmans often have porches and decorative gables. Builds from the midcentury and on include raised ranches, ranch-style homes and split-levels. House prices range from about $500,000 to $950,000. Lower real estate prices distinguish Brighton from other Seattle neighborhoods. "In fact, it's pretty affordable. This is a draw for first-time homebuyers and investors," Hill says. Going for $1 million to $1.5 million are roomy, modern-styled single-family homes: some brand new and some built in the past decade. There is an abundance of townhouses, with prices from about $533,000 to $790,000. One of the newest developments, Othello Square, is in a walkable setting, just blocks from the Othello Station for light rail.

Othello Playground, community garden plots
Othello Playground is a favorite for the kids; it also has walking paths and plenty of green space. For even more room outdoors, the 300-acre Seward Park is nearby. The northern tip of the peninsula has a fishing pier. Hiking trails, an amphitheater, a beach, boat launches and more make the park a popular destination, especially on the weekends. Though there are wait times, residents wanting their own plot for growing vegetables can sign up for a raised bed at Angel Morgan P-Patch Community Gardens. Older residents find support and services at Southeast Seattle Senior Center, where daily activities and special events provide opportunities for friendship and community.

Rainier Beach for most high schoolers
Public schools include Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, which has a C-plus grade from Niche and Aki Kurose Middle, a B-minus. Most of Brighton is zoned for Rainier Beach High, grade B, listed by Niche as the No. 5 standout high school in Washington. Buses, light rail from Othello Station
There are ample public transportation options here in Brighton, including King County Metro and Sound Transit buses. Sound Transit's light rail service is available from the Othello Station. Some people use Metro Flex on-demand rides, requested via an app for the same cost as a King County Metro bus trip. Locals typically use the refillable ORCA card to pay for Seattle's public transportation services.For those commuting or traveling farther afield, Interstate 5 is nearby. The drive to Downtown Seattle is about 7 miles northwest, and Sea-Tac, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, is about the same distance in the other direction.

The neighbors usually plan a get together and have a barbecue in the summer. The restaurants that surround the area are very close so it is not a hassle.

Police patrol around m neighborhood on busy nights like Fridays or Saturday and the precinct is very close by so that makes sense to me why they would be out riving around. As for crime there have been robberies sometimes and not to rectly some houses have been vandalized and burglarized as well.

I have heard some crimes happened around my living area ever since I moved in. I don't have any concern for police visibility but the sense of safety. Apparently, crimes are increasing especially robbery took place more often than the past.
