Why Live in Shallotte

A few miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, the town of Shallotte has a rural atmosphere just minutes from busy shopping centers and restaurants in Brunswick County. The winding Shallotte River snakes through peaceful residential pockets and a quiet commercial district while keeping the tourists at bay. “Shallotte has a coastal feel with river access and marshes, but it doesn’t have the touristy atmosphere that you’ll find in nearby communities like Ocean Isle Beach,” says local real estate agent Jesse McCrery with Coldwell Banker Sloane Realty. Some homes south of the downtown area surround the River’s Edge Golf Club or sit in neighborhoods like Briarwood Estates. Colonial Revivals, bungalows and brick ranch-style homes were built between the 1960s and ’90s, most on spacious lots next to tree-shaded streets. However, with its steadily growing population, the area also has a handful of 21st-century neighborhoods and numerous subdivisions still in development. “We have had huge growth in the past 10 years,” says McCreary. “In the past few years alone, we have had at least three new neighborhoods with 300 or so homes each — and we’re expecting more growth in the coming years.”
