About Sinking Spring, PA

About Sinking Spring, PA

Sinking Spring, an old suburban borough in the Reading area, resembles many other Pennsylvania towns, filled with rowhomes and farmhouses from the early to mid-20th century, a blend of both its agricultural heritage as well as industrial roots.

Located about 5 miles west of Reading and spanning only 1.5 square miles, the town supports a population of 3,000 people. Compared to boroughs closer to the city, the tracts in Sinking Spring are sparser and more rural. Penn Avenue passes through the town and serves as the main thoroughfare, with businesses, shops and fast-food franchises situated between homes and parking lots along the highway.

The major appeal of living in Sinking Spring is the housing variety and accessibility to activities. “You can find rows, twins and single-family homes with character,” says Dave Mattes, a native of Berks County and a Realtor with Remax of Reading. “What you’ll find about the entire area are parks, trails, minor league sports and everything imaginable. They're all within 10 minutes.”

Homes in recent years have generally sold for about $100,000 to $300,000. At that price, you’ll find homes with brick or stone exteriors and hardwood floors inside, exhibiting a historic and rustic charm, according to Mattes. Some of the homes on the higher end are part of newer housing tracts built in the last 20 years. In the Brookfield Manor subdivision, where homes have as much as 5,800 square feet of living space, recent sales have gone as high as $630,000.

Head east from Sinking Springs and you’ll pass a few other boroughs before reaching Reading’s downtown district that’s full of restaurants, theaters, bars, venues and offices. The Fighting Phils, the city’s minor league baseball team and an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, are also located near downtown. Through the spring and summer, the team draws thousands of fans to the historic FirstEnergy Stadium to cheer on the team and enjoy post-game fireworks on warm summer nights.

You don’t have to cross the Schuylkill River into downtown to have a good time. In West Reading, The Barley Mow is one of several breweries and eateries in the district. There, you can lounge in the backyard beer garden and sample a variety of the more than 700 craft brews on its menu.

Students in Sinking Springs are zoned to the Wilson School District, serving approximately 6,200 students on Reading’s outskirts. GreatSchools.org gives Wilson High School an 8 out of 10, as the school shows an above average performance when it comes to standardizing testing, student progress and college readiness.

Outside of school, children and adults learn new skills and ways to express themselves at the Yocum Institute for Arts Education, a longtime community gathering place that offers classes and programs for visual arts, dance, yoga, theater and music. The institute also manages a preschool and kindergarten program. When the school year ends, kids look forward to hanging out with friends and participating in activities through the institute’s summer camps.
