Diverse, growing and changing city

South Salt Lake is home to a growing and diverse community with an eclectic dining and shopping scene and a changing cityscape. Located almost directly 3 miles south of the capital city’s downtown, South Salt Lake is a combination of industrial and commercial businesses to the west and a mix of residential and commercial districts to the east. Despite its ties to industry, the city has made efforts to embrace change, as seen through its adopted tagline “City on the Move.” Some of those changes have included the building of a downtown and streetcar neighborhood and growth in local businesses. “In addition to being another great family [community], South Salt Lake is home to several award-winning breweries and distilleries, including Shades Brewing, Level Crossing and Grid City Beer Works,” says Ryan Mack, director of media and communications for the Visit Salt Lake group. Adding to the local scene are places like the Chinatown Market with its dozen restaurants and giant specialty Asian foods supermarket on a nearly 6-acre property.

Ranch-style, bungalows and condos

Like in many other places across the Salt Lake City area, the residential areas here are comprised of many ranch-style homes, houses with bungalow and Craftsman features, traditional houses and some mid-rise condominiums and townhouses. While they can feature some wide streets, the tree-lined blocks here are otherwise walkable and feature many lots with neatly manicured and decorated front yards separated by fences. With more than half of residents being renters, there is also a mix of duplexes and urban apartment buildings. Price points here can range from the lower $300,000s for two-bedroom condos to the low to mid-$500,000s for bungalows and traditional styles. Then some Craftsmen can run in the mid $400,000s, while some of the newer traditional styles can exceed $700,000.
