Springfield's most prominent lake
Lake Springfield was built in the 1950s to help cool steam-turbine generators at the former James River Power Plant. The power plant shut down in 2021, but the lake remains as a popular spot to explore. "People don't swim in the lake because the old power plant is there," says Amy Hunsaker-Williams, a Springfield native and Realtor with Keller Williams Realty. "But a lot of people use the lake to kayak and fish." The Environmental Protection Agency listed the lake as an impaired waterway in 2020 because of algae blooms that are not toxic to humans but are a health risk to fish. Catfish and carp have also been found to accumulate PCBs, most likely from the power plant, so the EPA warns people only to eat one serving per month from the lake. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course and trails that stretch along the shoreline and through dense woods. It's common to spot deer, turkey and waterfowl in the park, along with eagles during winter.

Big box retailers and a variety of local restaurants
Locals get all their shopping and dining done on the north side of the neighborhood along East Republic Road and Glenstone Avenue. Several local businesses are set up in shopping plazas on East Republic, including a mix of cafes, casual dining spots and fine-dining establishments. For an extravagant experience, Char Steakhouse and Oyster Bar is the place to go, serving up dry-aged Wagyu beef and fresh shellfish. When friends want to hang out late, they go to Georgia Macs to grab a burger and beer while watching sports or enjoying live music. Meanwhile, Aviary Café, known for its sweet crepes, is a popular spot for brunch. A short walk from Aviary is Farmers Market of the Ozarks, an indoor facility where residents can shop for fresh, local produce. Just down the road, Harter House Supermarket offers a regional grocery store experience. On Glenstone Avenue, there are more big box retailers like Target and Walmart, as well as many national chain restaurants.

Tranquil subdivisions and POA communities
Shade trees in most of Lake Springfield's subdivisions create a look and feel all their own. "It has a lot of character, and there are a lot of hills," says Hunsaker-Williams. "You might have to go up the steepest road to get to your house. And the houses are kind of built into these hills." Ranch-style homes from the 1960s and 1970s are predominant throughout the neighborhood, many featuring attached garages and three to four bedrooms. Situated on leafy quarter-acre lots, they're typically priced from $300,000 to $450,000. Similar homes, along with more modern neo-eclectic designs, are located in the Lakewood Village and Spring Creek Property Owner's Associations, both of which have clubhouses with outdoor pools and tennis courts for the community to enjoy. Homes in these POAs range from 2,000 to 4,500 square feet, selling for around $350,000 to $600,000. While they rarely hit the market, less than a dozen lakefront houses range from $250,000 to $500,000. Most are covered by a canopy of trees and feature back decks overlooking the water.

Two educational paths
Most students attend Walt Disney Elementary, which is conveniently located in the neighborhood. Named after the late animation icon who spent part of his childhood in Missouri, the elementary school gets a B-plus grade from Niche. Students go on to B-plus-graded Cherokee Middle and B-plus-graded Kickapoo High, ranked in Missouri's top 100 high schools. Those living on the neighborhood's northeast side start at Eugene Field Elementary, graded a B. They'll go on to B-graded Pershing Middle before finishing their degrees at Glendale High, which gets a B and offers three different academies. They include the Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the Academy of Business and Law and the Academy of Technology and Design.
Disney Elementary was once part of the independent Kickapoo school disctrict.
Some students from Carver, Pershing and Cherokee middle schools attend Kickapoo High School.

8-mile drive to Downtown Springfield
Lake Springfield is close to U.S. routes 60 and 65, allowing easy navigation around the city. It's also about an 8-mile drive to Downtown Springfield, with several stop traffic lights along the way.
