Quiet suburb in the Hudson Valley
A town of 14,000 on the western banks of the Hudson River, Stony Point is a peaceful, low-key community. “It’s the northernmost town in Rockland County,” says Lauren Muller, a broker with Howard Hanna Rand Realty who’s lived in the area for decades. “There’s Harriman State Park and its mountain to our west, Bear Mountain State Park to the north and the Hudson River to the east, so it’s definitely a place for nature enthusiasts.” Many end up making the 40-mile commute south to New York City, but they return to a quiet, low-key community where they can spend their weekends boating and hiking.

Variety of mid-20th-century styles
Stony Point primarily has single-family houses built throughout the 20th century, though some contemporary new builds have popped up recently. Most houses are Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes and bi-levels. “The neighborhoods are very pretty and green, with these curvy, woodsy roads,” Muller says. “Lots are more spacious here than other areas in Rockland County.” This is particularly true in neighborhoods like Tomkins Cove. The median sales price in Stony Point is about $640,000, which is well above the national median.

Hiking, boating and fishing at nearby state parks
Stony Point is framed by natural spaces, making outdoor recreation popular. Both Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park are popular places to explore wooded hiking trails, fish and swim in freshwater lakes, and camp or picnic. In Stony Point, boaters dock their watercraft at the marinas that line the Hudson River and public parks with sports fields and playgrounds are scattered throughout town. Golfers have access to Patriot Hills Golf Club, an 18-hole public course. Since Stony Point experiences all four seasons, including long and cold winters, people often exercise at the private indoor gyms in town, too.
Hiking opportunities abound in the nearby Harriman State Park including the "Lemon Squeezer," a trail known for it's narrow rock crevice.

Local restaurants and supermarkets, drives to outlet shopping
Stony Point doesn’t have a huge food scene, but there are some local restaurants around the U.S. Route 202 corridor. These include pizzerias, pubs and locally owned diners. Muller says that the town has stores to cover necessities, like supermarkets, but residents drive out of town for larger shopping trips. The Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, a massive outdoor shopping area, is about 15 miles northwest of Stony Point. The closest major medical center is the Montefiore Nyack Hospital, about 11 miles south of Stony Point.

Polar plunges in the Hudson for a cause
The town hosts frequent community events, including a free summer concert series at Riverfront Park, a fall festival with local vendors and a festive holiday parade. One of the most anticipated events is the polar plunge held by the Stony Point Seals organization on Super Bowl Sunday. “The entire town gets together for it,” Muller says. “They choose a few children with medical needs to fundraise for it, and people will jump into the freezing river.”
Dual enrollment options at North Rockland High
Students in Stony Point are zoned to the North Rockland Central School District, which serves almost 8,000 students and earns an overall B rating from Niche. North Rockland High School, the district’s only high school, scores a B-plus from Niche. High school students may begin earning college credits through Advanced Placement and dual enrollment programs.

Parkways route to New York City
Residents depend on personal vehicles to get around town and commute to work. U.S. route 202 and the Palisades Interstate Parkway run through town, connecting drivers to other areas in Rockland County. New York City, where many locals work, is about 44 miles south of Stony Point. Commuters may take a Rockland Coaches bus from the Stony Point Park & Ride and then transfer to a NJ Transit Bus line to head to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The entire trip takes over 2 hours, so most people drive on the Palisades Parkway instead. New York City’s airports, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, are the closest major airports.
