Terrestrial and extraterrestrial rocks in the Marble City
Known as the Marble City, Sylacauga is famous for its rocks — some from this world, some from another. In 1954, it was the site of the only known meteorite to strike a person. The ill-starred victim survived mostly unscathed, and the fragment is now in the Alabama Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama, about 2 hours away. Sylacauga is also home to vast quarries that provide marble to landmarks around the globe. “We are known for the whitest marble in the world,” says Cristie Hope, a Realtor at Keller Williams Metro South. “The marble at the Lincoln Memorial — all that actually came from Sylacauga.” The stone industry is still a major employer for the city's 12,000 residents, who enjoy a thriving main street, access to outdoor recreation and affordable home prices for Central Alabama.

Local shops and restaurants along Broadway Avenue
Broadway Avenue is Sylacauga’s main commercial corridor, with restaurants and small businesses lining the walkable streets. Residents can park downtown and walk from shop to shop through the roughly six-block district. “It’s thriving,” Hope says. “Our city tries to keep local businesses downtown, so our stores will stay downtown.” Fort Williams Street has several shopping centers and fast food restaurants, while big box stores and supermarkets sit off Highway 280.

Celebrating the Magic of Marble
Marble was first quarried in the Sylacauga area early in the 19th century. Two centuries later, the marble industry is still a significant part of the local economy, with three companies continuing to produce marble in and around the city. Sylacauga celebrates this heritage with its annual Magic of Marble Festival, a roughly two-week event that attracts sculptors from around the world. Attendees can watch the artists work with Sylacauga marble and tour the city’s quarries.

Recreation at nearby lakes like Lay Lake
Sylacauga is located in the Talladega National Forest, which covers nearly 400,000 acres in Central Alabama. The forest offers plenty of outdoor recreation, including trails for hiking. Residents also frequent the nearby lakes. “If you like lake life, then you’re good,” Hope says. “We’ve got Lay Lake, Lake Martin and then Logan Martin Lake in Pell City.” The Sylacauga Parks & Recreation department operates the city’s green spaces, including Noble Park, which includes a baseball field, a playground and a skate park.

Nearby to Birmingham and Montgomery
Located in Central Alabama, Sylacauga is roughly 45 miles from Birmingham via U.S. Route 280. Meanwhile, Alabama Highway 21 runs south from the city to the state capital, Montgomery, 60 miles away. While each city has a commercial airport, residents often head the 120 miles to much larger Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
