The aptly named University area centers around FSU, FAMU and TCC
The University District of Tallahassee gets its name from the prominent colleges in the area. This includes Florida State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and Tallahassee Community College. Founded in 1851, FSU offers over 283 degree programs. FAMU maintains a four-year ranking as the highest historically black college and university, with a foundation of 134 years. TCC, established in 1966, is one of the top community colleges in the nation. The university community caters to college students and teachers. The area has many restaurants, shopping, apartments, and things to do.
Cottages and ranch homes dominate this college-area district
Homes are primarily cottages, craftsman, and ranch-style homes, ranging from 500 square feet to 3,200 square feet, that are as old as the 1950s. The Valley Green subdivision is a mid-range cost, quiet neighborhood convenient to the universities. Single-family homes are popular in the University District, but townhomes and duplexes are also available.
From aviation to art, schools reflect diverse student paths
Schools in the community include Sabal Palm Elementary School, which aims to instill positive character traits in its students and has an overall grade of B from Niche.
Sail High School, graded A-minus, focuses on art and innovation. Amos P. Godby High School, a public magnet high school with a B-minus, offers students courses in nursing, aviation, agriculture, information technology, and welding. Parents looking into private schools may consider The Magnolia School for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
Sports complexes and stadiums are central to neighborhood life
As a college area, football and other sports are a big deal here. Close by is Doak S. Campbell Stadium, Florida State University's football stadium, which seats 82,000 people. The Florida State University Sportsplex is also in the University District. It hosts a variety of soccer games and tournaments throughout the season. The James Messer Sports Complex includes 11 lighted baseball/softball fields and the Mike Blankenship Skate Park. Enjoy the great outdoors at Innovative Park's 208 acres of spring-fed lakes, forestland, and rolling hills. The park also holds 17 research and development facilities, which are home to over 30 organizations. During the summer, the area offers three public pools to serve the community.
Local vintage shops and national chains serve the university area
The University area of Tallahassee is brimming with locally owned vintage stores and bookstores catering to college students. There are many trendy shopping areas, including the WestEnd Square Shopping Mall. This mall is home to Pet Supermarket, Aveda, the UPS store, Tijuana Flats, an incredible tea bar, and, of course, a coffee shop! Also nearby are Publix, Walmart and Aldi.
Close to downtown with jobs in education, law and tech
The University District is a great place to live and work. It is close to downtown, and the bus system travels nearly everywhere. Industries to work for include education, government, printing and publishing, law, non-profits, real estate, healthcare, and technology. The cost of living is generally lower than the average nationwide. With no property tax on moving vehicles and no state income tax, the area is more affordable than many others in the state.
