Sandwiched by the thrilling coasters of Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and the waterfront views of the Hillsborough River, Temple Crest is somewhat of a juxtaposition. Due 3 miles south of the University of South Florida, the area is shared by homeowners and renters with access to large arenas, several shopping centers and outdoor recreation. "There is a beautiful park along the river where you can launch a boat or just sit back and enjoy the view," says Lara Manrique of RE/MAX, who is in the top 1 percent of all Tampa Realtors. The community is known for reasonably priced housing compared to the rest of the city, and a day on the beach in Clearwater and St. Pete is within a 40-mile drive.

Mid-century modern homes are unique to Temple Crest
Despite nearby attractions, the streets in Temple Crest are relatively quiet. "Proximity to an amusement park isn't always a plus to residents, but it doesn't spill over into the neighborhood much," Manrique says. Houses are set on larger lots shaded mainly by large oaks with Spanish moss and stout palm trees and driveways large enough for a small boat or jet ski. Homes were built primarily in the 1950s and 60s, consisting of ranch-style and Mid-century modern Craftsman residences. Screened-in patios – often referred to as "Florida sunrooms"- are a popular addition, as are carports and one-car garages. "There are some distinct architectural details in this community," Manrique says. "Midcentury modern homes are common there but are very unusual in Florida."
When it comes to the housing market, Temple Crest is considerably competitive; the neighborhood has a median price of $305,000, roughly $150,000 less than Tampa Bay. "Price-wise, $250,000 is going to be your starting point, and about $450,000 will be on the higher end," Manrique says. The price of properties depends on location – like proximity to Busch Gardens or the riverfront – and square footage, which ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 square feet of living space. Temple Crest also has many apartments; renters comprise 64 percent of residents. Rent ranges from $1,500 for a two-bedroom apartment to $2,500 for a three-to-four-bedroom privately owned home.

Dining and shopping options are expanding within a 3-mile radius
The streets of Temple Crest are sleepy, but East Busch Boulevard on the neighborhood's northern boundary is lined with shopping, lodging and dining destinations. Restaurants include Zeko's Mediterranean Grill, well-known for its fried gizzards; Mel's Hot Dogs, a no-frills diner with a heavy emphasis on hotdog-themed décor. Another popular choice is Gaspar's Patio Bar & Grille. The family-owned pub consists of a pirate-themed bar, a large pool hall and an outdoor patio area. Staff recommend attending karaoke or coming to enjoy live music on Friday nights.
Several national chain grocers are located within 3 miles. Sanwa Farmer's Market offers a warehouse full of fresh produce and a variety of Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Asian products bought in bulk and wholesale. University Mall is 3 miles north in Tampa's Uptown near Fowler Avenue. Development projects plan to turn the area into a main strip with affordable housing and mass transit.

King High School students focus on charitable initiatives
According to Niche, Hillsborough County Public Schools is the second-best school district in the Tampa area, giving it a B-plus. Dr Carter G Woodson teaches kindergarten through eighth grade and earns a C from Niche. Sligh Middle School also earns a C. Highly rated King High School is graded A-minus from Niche and is in the top 10 percent of all Florida high schools in college prep. Students at the school are active in charity; in 2019, students created BestFit Foundation, a nonprofit that provides clothes, such as business attire for interviews and prom dresses, and scholarships for fellow students in need.
