North of New York City
Just north of the bustling New York City, close to Yonkers, lies Tuckahoe, a thriving neighborhood peppered with local shops and restaurants. It retains a small-town, local aura while simultaneously remaining connected to the surrounding area and being close to a number of parks. Between the parks and the Bronx River flowing along its west side, the area’s perfect for nature lovers. Tuckahoe is also bordered almost entirely by expressways and parkways linking it to the rest of everything New York has to offer. “As far as commuting is concerned, you can’t get a better spot,” says Marc Gerber, an associate broker and trainer with Berkshire Hathaway.
Pizza, breweries, shopping malls and more
Residents don’t have to look too far to find area-based dining. “There’s so many local restaurants that it’s unfair,” Gerber says. “There’s so many of them. There’s probably a dozen or 15 pizza places within the town, which when you consider the size of it is absolutely insane.” Other local favorites include Giovanni’s Delicatessen & Catering, Broken Bow Brewery and Buleria Tapas & Wine Bar. The shopping center Vernon Hills Village is located right in Tuckahoe as well, offering a huge selection of apparel stores like Nike and the Gap alongside a Barnes & Noble, a Pottery Barn and more. For groceries, check out the Stop & Shop just beyond the eastern boundary.

Trademark variety in architecture
Like many neighborhoods in the Westchester area, Tuckahoe is defined by its variety of architectural styles. Colonials, tudors, raised ranches and split-levels can all be found in Tuckahoe, though Gerber says the styles are dependent on when the homes were built. Price ranges vary, with smaller homes typically selling for at least $650,000. Generally, homes in the Tuckahoe neighborhood sell for between $750,000 and $800,000.

Highly-regarded education for students
The Tuckahoe Union Free School District is a highly-rated outlet for education, made up of acclaimed schools. The William E. Cottle School scores an A-minus on Niche and serves students from kindergarten to fifth grade, who then move on to the A-minus-rated Tuckahoe Middle School. After eighth grade there, graduation moves them to Tuckahoe High School, which receives an A-minus and features clubs like jazz band, debate and snow sports. “The school systems are small, so there’s smaller class sizes and a better student-to-teacher ratio,” Gerber says. “They’re playing for championships every year because they only play against so many schools, so picture playing for a championship in just about every sport.”

Numerous parks around Tuckahoe
Finding things to do outdoors isn’t hard in Tuckahoe. Established parks are few specifically in the neighborhood, but are plenty around it, from Sprain Ridge Park with the Grassy Sprain Reservoir to the northwest to Twin Lakes County Park to the southeast. Within Tuckahoe, Parkway Oval Park spans 14 acres and features fields for baseball and soccer alongside a playground and more. “We’re very fortunate where we are because we have biking, riding and jogging paths going up and down the center of the county north and south,” Gerber says. “There’s a minimum of dozen parks littered throughout the area. Some are smaller than others, but every school has its own park associated with it and you have a number of ballfields located in other areas. As far as outdoor space is concerned, there’s a baseball league, an enormous soccer league, football leagues, lacrosse leagues and basketball programs.”

Easy navigation of New York
Parkways bookend Tuckahoe, one to the east and one to the west. On the eastern side, Route 22 runs along nearly the entire eastern border of New York, from Long Island to Canada. To the west, the Bronx River Parkway parallels the border of Tuckahoe. “We have the convenience of having parkways on both the east and west sides of town,” Gerber says. “It’s very easy to get anywhere because of those two parkways, and the amazing thing is that as you go north and south, they’re connected by the Cross County Parkway and Cross-Westchester Expressway. There’s six parkways in a county no more than 20 miles wide. It’s incredible.” There are also trains and buses, with one bus line on Central Avenue in Yonkers. That’s just a couple miles from Tuckahoe and connects directly into New York City.
